Maiden Endurance Victory for Motorsport Wheels
Announced: 2020 Grand Prize Winner to Race at Fernando Alonso’s Kart Circuit
Dubai, UAE, 1 March 2020: Motorsport Wheels (#8), with veteran Sodi World Series (SWS) drivers Romaldo Labroy and Maz Nawaz, won the opening round of the 2020 Dubai Kartdrome Endurance Championship on Friday (28 February). EBC Brakes (#7) topped the Nations Cup class and Team Emirates (#20) claimed the Corporate category.
Twenty-seven teams, with 82 drivers of 25 different nationalities, came together to challenge the first round on the new Reverse Switchback with Hill Circuit at Dubai Kartdrome.
After 400 laps and over eight hours of endurance kart racing, only 0.089 seconds separated the top two teams at the chequered flag. Crossing the finish line bumper to bumper, Motorsport Wheels and EBC Brakes were relentless throughout the entire opening round of the Endurance Championship, with Motorsport Wheels seizing its first win by a paper-thin margin.
Arjun Manjunath and Anjum Sheikh of EBC Brakes just missed out on the overall victory by millimetres but the Indian drivers were happy to collect a first-place trophy in the Nations Cup category, ahead of the Saudi Arabian squad Seven Racing (#4).
Muteb Alsaqhan and Saud Almasoud of Seven Racing still had reason to celebrate as the Saudi drivers claimed fifth overall and topped the newly created GCC Cup, ahead of Emirati rival Dalma Racing Team (#22).
Team Emirates, with drivers Asim Ashraf, Jiby Kuriakose and Sai Prakash, had an inspired campaign, going from 16th position on the start grid and climbing up all the way to sixth position at the end, earning the team third-place silverware in Nations Cup and a shimmering first-place trophy for topping the Corporate category, ahead of Redline Racing (#17).
Grand prize for the four-round championship is free team entry to race at former Formula One World Champion Fernando Alonso’s kart track, Museo Y Circuito, in Spain.
Dubai Kartdrome Manager David Bright said, “I am also pleased to announce that we have partnered with Fernando Alonso’s Circuit in Spain on an exchange program, where our 2020 Championship Winning Team will receive complimentary entry in the Spanish 12HR in June 2021. The 2020 Champions from the Circuit of Fernando Alonso will receive a prize entry into our Dubai 24HR endurance race this December.”
