Studies indicate that 40 percent of the infertility cases are caused by men, 40 percent by women and the other 20 percent correspond to mix or combined causes

Dubai, UAE, 19 July 2018:    There is a misconception that infertility affects women more than men.  Both are impacted equally, according to experts at IVI Middle East Fertility Clinic – UAE’s leading infertility services institution.

“Infertility impacts both men and women. It is important to know that this problem does not concern the woman only. Our research proves that there are ample cases attributed to rising male infertility too and it’s about time that we took note of this,” said Prof. Dr. Human Fatemi, ESHRE certified Subspecialist, Reproductive Medicine and Reproductive Surgery, and Medical Director at IVI Middle East Fertility Clinic.

Infertility is caused due to many social and medical reasons. Among the general medical causes, 20 percent of cases have no explanation. However, obesity, diabetes mellitus, thyroid diseases, Vitamin D deficiency, consanguinity, certain medications as well as cancer treatments including chemotherapy are some of the factors that trigger infertility in both men and women. One of the main causes of social infertility is the delay in trying to have children. Studies show that the perfect age to have a child is 25-30. But nowadays, couples decide to have children at a later age, greatly due to work commitments. After 35 years of age, fertility levels drop significantly, and after 45, the possibility of a pregnancy is exceptional.

While infertility is generally considered as a condition with women, studies indicate that 40 percent of the infertility cases are caused by problems affecting men, as low sperm quality, obstruction of ducts and varicocele. However, a further 40 percent would be due to female reasons such as early menopause, endometriosis, obstructions or lesions of the fallopian tubes, uterine anomalies or ovulatory problems. The other 20 percent corresponds to mix or combined causes, in which both members of the couple are responsible.

“Those who suffer fertility problems often endure an emotional rollercoaster. It can affect both individual well-being and a couple’s relationship. It is important that couples navigate the challenges of infertility by engaging in open conversations and finding out the right treatment options. At IVI Middle East Fertility Clinic, we recommend that if you’re looking to start a family and haven’t conceived yet, you consult a specialist to increase your chances of having a baby,” concluded Dr. Laura Melado, Specialist – Obstetrics, Gynecology and IVF at IVI Fertility Abu Dhabi.

With an excellent team of international doctors, IVI delivers a success rate of over 70 percent, the highest in the Middle East. IVI Fertility has three clinics in the Middle East – Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Muscat, which strive to offer patients fertility treatments that are honest, transparent and customised to their medical conditions coupled with the best clinical practices.
